How To Survive Flying With Kids

Flying with little ones can feel like preparing for a mini adventure, but trust me, you got this! Start by packing wisely. Keep it simple: snacks, favorite toys, diapers, and wipes. Noise-canceling headphones or a tablet with saved cartoons can be lifesavers to keep tiny travelers entertained.

Getting to the airport early seems like a no-brainer, but it’s a game-changer. Leaving yourself some extra time can help you manage the unexpected—a tantrum, anyone?—without the added stress of missing the flight. It’s important not to arrive too early unless you have access to a lounge, as waiting at a crowded gate can be uncomfortable for everyone. However, you should still give yourself enough time for a last-minute diaper change, bathroom break, or coffee run without the stress of rushing to the gate.

Seat choice matters more than you’d think. Choose aisle seats for easy restroom trips or bulkhead seats for more legroom. The extra space gives kids room to stretch without disturbing other passengers. Shhhh…booking airline seats with an empty seat in between to secure extra space can be a smart tactic, although not always guaranteed.

Bring along favorite toys and games and of course an iPad/Tablet with dowloaded games, movies or shows. Instead of crayons rolling under the seats, bring a doodle board. If your child can read, a new book from their favorite series will keep them occupied for a while. Window Clinger Stickers are a fun and engaging activity for kids, offering an interactive way to decorate windows without the mess or permanence of regular stickers. Toddlers may enjoy a busy book filled with puzzles and activities.

Leverage technology to your advantage. Airline apps are handy for checking in, tweaking seat selections, and getting gate updates. It reduces one thing to worry about, which is always a win.

Comfort is key. Dress them in cozy layers since airplanes can go from chill to toasty. Consider bringing a blanket to keep them snug and maybe something personal like their favorite plush toy to provide them with some comfort from home.

Always pack an extra set of clothes, especially for long flights. On our recent trip to Hawaii, I had each of my kids carry an extra shirt and pants in their personal bag, just in case of any spills. While we didn’t end up needing them, it’s always a good idea to be prepared!

Keep them hydrated and well-fed. Pack an assortment of snacks and drinks (after security checkpoint of course) keeping in mind any dietary quirks or preferences. It keeps spirits high and tummies from rumbling.

Plan for sleep on a long flight. Whether it’s a nap or a full sleep, a neck pillow or a beloved blankie can assist with nodding off into dreamland.

Consider some pre-airport energy burning. Many airports have spots where kids can safely play. Involving them in some physical activity can help run out that pre-flight energy.

Lastly, get familiar with your airline’s policies about strollers, boarding perks for families, and kids’ meals online before the your trip. The extra prep helps ensure a smoother experience.

We’ve had our fair share of mid-flight meltdowns with our kids, and here’s a gentle reminder: you’re likely stressing about it way more than anyone else on the plane. Most people understand that travel can be tough on little ones. So, take a deep breath, stay patient, and remind yourself—this moment will pass. You’ve got this!
